Digital Platforms

The Internet Was Public Before It Was Billions

I read the terms, and the tollbooth is already asking me to agree. Public research—from DARPA’s ARPANET to NSF-supported networking—helped lay the internet’s foundations. Now Google, Amazon, and Meta are among the private platforms doing business along that digital road. The contradiction isn’t that companies built nothing; it’s that shared groundwork can open the way to a digital economy where ordinary users still face private gates.

We encounter the tolls as charges, exchanges of attention, or the price of convenience. The platform calls the gate innovation, then hands us a button marked “agree” and waits for our click like it just invented the road. We helped make the highway possible; now the tollbooth wants credit for the journey and our attention as the fare.
