Public research, grants, labs and universities can help make future innovation possible; that doesn’t mean any one grant built any one company’s product. It does mean the private-first habit deserves scrutiny. Public contribution should count when AI’s benefits are shared, not fade into the background while wealth and control stay private.
A public dividend is a proposal, not a check already in the mail. But if taxpayers are important enough to appear in AI’s origin story, they’re important enough to count in the conversation about who benefits.
